Our Program

The residency is an ACGME-certified, 3-year Emergency Medicine program in Marietta, GA at a Level I trauma center.

At Kennestone, we emphasize a strong emergency medicine program grounded in a broad medical foundation to develop excellent emergency physicians. In your first year, you will spend over half your time at Wellstar Kennestone Regional Medical Center’s emergency department: six months in the adult ED, two months in pediatrics, and one month in orthopedics and procedures. Additional rotations in the MICU, anesthesia, and EMS will enhance your training with essential resuscitation and pre-hospital care skills. You will also have a month focused on bedside ultrasound in the emergency department, with weekly reviews from faculty to help you master emergency department ultrasounds.

In the second year, the focus shifts to critical care and resuscitation. Rotations include the pediatric ICU at the Medical College of Georgia and the trauma floor at Wellstar Kennestone. PGY2 residents will spend seven months in emergency medicine: six in the adult ED and one in the pediatric ED at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta Scottish Rite. During shifts, you will lead the initial resuscitation of critically ill and injured patients, including primary assessment and airway management.

In year three at Wellstar Kennestone, residents enhance patient care and leadership in emergency medicine. During seven months in the emergency department, you will lead your care zone, managing all patients. One of these months will be an ED rotation at Wellstar Douglas, offering a diverse experience in emergency care in a more rural setting. You will also precept medical students and junior residents, improving your teaching and supervisory skills. Longitudinal pediatric emergency medicine shifts at CHOA will allow you to lead care for children in the ED. Additionally, you will complete your OB/GYN rotation at Wellstar North Fulton Medical Center and begin a longitudinal course on medical business, covering topics like job recruitment, billing, and coding.

These sessions aim to bolster the practical skills of our residents, allowing them to interact with various clinical scenarios within a controlled setting. This experience significantly enriches your clinical knowledge for application in real-world situations.
